You need to be aware of this key change to Texas real estate taxes.
A homestead exemption is a tax break for homeowners. If you apply for the exemption with your primary residence, it keeps your property taxes from rising too quickly, which is a huge problem right now.
How do you get one? As soon as you close on your home, you’ll get a letter from the county about it. Here is the Homestead Exemption form. The deadline is April 30th.
You used to have to wait until the following year after you purchased to file for the exemption. Texas has now changed the rules so that you can file for your exemption in the same year that you close on your purchase.
If you have any questions about the change or anything else related to real estate, don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
